Neelam ends the call and stares out of the cab window. She’s glad to have the opportunity to score some points at the firm. Schuyler Biddle, another associate at Sidley, Austin, and Swain, and her chief “frenemy,” was dripping with envy when the firm handed Neelam this opportunity to get to the Massachusetts office. Biddle, the golden boy, was first in his class at St. Grottlesex Prep School. She’s heard through the grapevine that three of his great uncles were in the Social Register – and ended up as partners at Sidley, Austin and Swain, including his uncle – Swain. Biddle’s family connections at the Chillmark Yacht Club don’t hurt either – the head of the Massachusetts office is also the club’s president.
But today it’s Neelam who is off on the trip. “Finally, a break,” she says to herself.
As the taxi pulls up to the airport departure area, Neelam thinks of her mother and is relieved that she’s finally getting the surgery she needs.
