Across the field of journalism we’ve had an “information infusion” from a broad range of sources over the summer. Analysis, review and reporting from the likes of PEW, Knight, the Economist, Clay Shirky, the FCC’s recent 450+ page report furthering the analysis Knight Foundation started two years ago, and CJR’s recent write up “What We Know so Far.” The Chicago Community Trust has released a mother lode of data revealing new insights on the power of linking. The list outlined above is far from exhaustive but a good representation of the depth, breadth and focus on the unfolding of a “news industry interrupted” by some of the brightest minds today.

We launched OpenMissouri.org as part of my RJI fellowship on March 17, during Sunshine Week. We had 135 data sets from nearly 20 state government agencies listed on the site at kickoff.

Since then, we’ve hit nearly 150 data sets and are continuing to add features (data file sharing and Sunshine letter generator) and otherwise tweak the site.

I’ve learned some great lessons this fellowship year by tapping into the wisdom of my fellow RJI fellows and Columbia developer Jamie Stephens, and from reading “Getting Real,” a book from 37signals, a web software company.

"The Advisory Council of the Institute for Advertising Ethics encourages the endorsement and promotion of the Institute's Principles and Practices for Advertising Ethics by Marketers, Advertising Agencies, Media Companies, and academic, professional and business associations. The procedure, as stated in the accompanying Resolution, dated April 14, 2011, is very straight forward and simply requires notification to the Executive Director, Wally Snyder at wsnyder@aaf.org,  that the company or organization is endorsing the principles utilizing the name of the Institute for Advertising Ethics.  All parties so notifying the Executive Director will be posted on the Institute's Websites.  The Institute also will review recommendations to add additional Commentaries to the Principles and will announce approval through publication on the Instiute's Websites, www.aaf.org ; and www.rjionline.org."

Open Missouri Day

Reynolds Fellow David Herzog hosted Open Missouri Day during Sunshine Week at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. The day-long event welcomed industry professionals to discuss the importance of accessing government data for journalists, citizens and businesses. Attendees also were able to participate in hands-on training. David's project aims to increase transparency in Missouri state and local government by creating an online catalog of databases stored offline by government agencies.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day Global Journalist invited the public to a live taping of its March 10 program.

The event, which was co-sponsored by Workforce of Women, took place in the Fred W. Smith Forum at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. A moderated conversation among in-studio panelists and call-in guests regarding the status of female journalists was be broadcasted live on KBIA, and a reception followed the event.

Open Secrets: MCDM’s Public Dialogue about WikiLeaks

Three days after Julian Assange released the most recent WikiLeaks documents, and 36 hours after deciding to publicly address the subject, the MCDM program put together the provocative event, “Open Secrets: An Open Conversation about WikiLeaks and Information Transparency in America,” drawing an excited crowd of roughly 130 people to the Microsoft Auditorium at the Seattle Public Library downtown on Friday evening, December 10. In addition to the crowd, the MCDM orchestrated a Livestream (watch video) of the event which by now has drawn 286 unique views and at the time had a peak of 80 participants. All discussion was bolstered by a vigorous Twitter feed (#opensecrets).
