Christopher Guess presents Push
RJI Fellow Christopher Guess spoke about Push, his open source mobile app, during a brown bag luncheon Aug. 31 at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.
Guess is improving the news app during his 2017-2018 fellowship. His tasks include simplifying the setup and management of the app, he says.
Developing a news app from scratch can take months for each operating system, he says. Although setting up Push doesn’t require a team of developers, he recommends news outlets work with a developer, even temporarily, for the setup process. Guess says Push can be operational on a news outlet’s server in a week.
The app is free and easily customizable for a news organization. His initial goal was to create an app for local newsrooms with features only available previously to national news outlets.
The code for the app is available on GitHub and can be used with WordPress, Joomla and SourceFabric’s Newsscoop CMS systems.
