Tucson Spotlight
Tucson Spotlight began hosting O’odham Media on its website. Led by Trinity Norris, a journalist and photographer from Sells District on the Tohono O’odham Nation, O’odham Media is a community-first storytelling platform dedicated to uplifting O’odham voices, culture, and lived experiences through writing and photography.
Using the stipend from RJI, Tucson Spotlight supported the production of two editions of a physical newsletter, 150 copies total, bringing O’odham Media’s community-centered Indigenous journalism directly into readers’ hands. Stickers were also produced to support grassroots marketing and build broader awareness of the platform.
O’odham Media remains fully independent and guided by its own community-focused mission, with Tucson Spotlight providing hosting and editorial support. O’odham Media is Tucson Spotlight’s first dedicated Indigenous-led vertical, providing a permanent, community-centered home for O’odham storytelling on the platform. The print newsletter was also a new format for the newsroom, expanding beyond digital publishing to put journalism directly into community hands.
Community response to O’odham Media has been positive. Stories published through the vertical have accumulated over 1,200 views, reflecting strong reader interest in O’odham-centered storytelling. Informal feedback from community members has been enthusiastic, with readers expressing appreciation for seeing O’odham voices and culture represented in local media.
The most important lesson we learned was that community-centered journalism works best when it is led by someone from within the community. Partnering with Trinity Norris, rather than simply covering O’odham communities from the outside, resulted in stories that resonated with readers in a way that traditional coverage rarely does.
For newsrooms interested in launching a similar project, our advice would be simple: find your Trinity. Identify a journalist who already has deep ties to the community you want to serve, give them editorial independence, and focus your resources on supporting their work rather than directing it. Infrastructure matters too. Having a dedicated space on the platform and a print component helped signal to the community that this was a lasting commitment, not a one-time feature.
Tucson Spotlight is now actively fundraising to support future editions of the O’odham Media print newsletter, with a dedicated donation page now live. Our newsroom has also added a second Indigenous reporter to its team, reflecting a broader commitment to authentic, community-centered coverage that goes beyond a single vertical.
