Post Episode 2: Data journalists investigate school shootings and sexual assault cases
IRE Director of Data Services Charles Minshew joins the show to discuss the projects, which include a deep look at how many students have been exposed to school shootings in America since Columbine, an analysis of hate crimes in K-12 schools, and a calculation of how many homes outside the flood plain filled with water after Hurricane Harvey.
Star Tribune Data Editor MaryJo Webster also joins the show remotely to discuss the paper’s ongoing reporting project “Denied Justice.” The series investigates rape and sexual assault cases to see how — and if — they were handled in the state of Minnesota. The reporting team found many cases never making it to an investigator and very few cases going to prosecutors.
