POY

Entries open for 82nd Pictures of the Year competition; deadline is Jan. 12

Pictures of the Year (POY), the prestigious photojournalism competition hosted by the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), is currently accepting entries for its 82nd contest. Entries, which can be submitted here, will be accepted through Jan. 12.

In addition to a slate of categories across a wide range of formats and subject matter, including premier awards for photographer of the year and international photographer of the year, this iteration of the competition will also feature topical categories for coverage of the U.S. presidential election and Olympic sports.

“So many impactful photographs come from daily reporting on the issues and events that matter to people,” said Marie D. De Jesús, director of POY and its sister competition for college students, College Photographer of the Year. “It’s important for photojournalists to know that they don’t need to be on a special assignment to take award-worthy photos. There are opportunities to ‘show truth with a camera’ everywhere.”

Sponsored by Nikon, the competition will be the first under the leadership of De Jesús, who joined RJI as POY director earlier this year, and it will also be the first to leverage RJI’s positioning at the Missouri School of Journalism with an innovative mentorship program. The brand-new pilot program will see School of Journalism alumni Michael Hamtil, BJ ’96, Deb Pastner, MA ‘24 and master’s candidate Antranik Tavitian working directly with students to review entries on questions of ethics and learn from the judging process.

Entries in the competition’s 37 categories will be judged by an esteemed team of experts, including The New York Times Photo Editor and School of Journalism alum Eve Edelheit, BJ ’11, and Cincinnati Enquirer Director of Photography Cara Owsley.

While entries will be accepted through Jan. 12, the entrance fee will rise from $50 to $60 on Jan. 6. Click here for more information and sign up for the POY quarterly newsletter.

About POY

Created in 1944 at the Missouri School of Journalism, founder Cliff Edom established the competition with the edict to “show truth with a camera.” It has since evolved into an international competition, becoming affiliated with the Reynolds Journalism Institute in 2008. Ethical eye-witness reporting and in-depth storytelling with a mission of education are the hallmarks of POY that represent “the gold standard” in photojournalism.
